FAMILY OF SOLDIER HONOURED WITH ELIZABETH
CROSS

The
family of Guardsman Dean Eddy was presented with the Elizabeth Cross
last weekend, in recognition of the loss of their loved one whilst serving
in the Armed Forces.
The Elizabeth Cross is awarded to the
next of kin of UK Armed Forces personnel who have died on operations,
or as a result of an act of terrorism, in recognition of their loss
and sacrifice.
Lord Crathorne, Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire,
presented the family of Guardsman Eddy with the Cross at a private ceremony
at Crathorne House, North Yorkshire.
Guardsman Dean Eddy was born on the 27th of June 1982 and joined the
British Army in 2000, enlisting into the Coldstream Guards.
He was deployed to Northern Ireland with the 1st Battalion for an operational
tour in 2003.
On the night of the 30th of August, Guardsman Dean Eddy was on duty
at the main entrance to Shackleton Barracks in Ballkelly, near Londonderry.
There
was an incident at the gate during which another soldier, who was off-duty,
fired a weapon.
Dean Eddy was hit and died as a result.
Janet Robson, his widow, who attended the ceremony with her husband
Dean Robson, and Dean's sister, Jade Robson, commented
: "We are delighted that Dean has been remembered in this way and that
his service and sacrifice has been honoured."
The introduction of the Elizabeth Cross in July last year,was the first
time the name of a reigning monarch
had been given to a new award since the George Cross was instituted
in 1940 by King George VI,for brave acts by both civilians and the military.
