The
Second Battalion in Pictures
Her
Majesties Second Battalion of The Coldstream Regiment of Foot Guards, was raised
in 1684. First Recorded taking part in a review on Putney Heath before King
Charles on the 2nd of October 1684. The Battalion continued its glorious history
for over 300 years, until reduced to a Company in 1994. That Company still
exists bearing the name Number 7 Coy. and carries the Colours and traditions of
the Second Battalion. |
The
following is a selection of pictures displayed in chronological order, depicting
the campaigns and postings the 2nd Bt. has undertaken. These are only a
tiny fraction of Pictures attributed to the Bt. over 300 years. We wish to
make this a permanent record of the history of a glorious Battalion. Submissions
of Photographs for this tribute page would be very welcome. | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Egypt

Oman & Kuwait-1961-1962In
March 1959 the Battalion. under Lt. Col.Sweeting moved to Kenya to join 24 Brigade.
The Bt. was based at Gil-Gil, some 70 miles north of Nairobi, it was here
that the Battalion. commenced a three year tour, the longest undertaken by a British
Regiment since WW2. Their role was to act as a first line Battalion able to
fly to any Middle East trouble spot within 24 hrs. The Brigade maintained a
Half Battalion detachment in Bahrain and in Feb. 1961 the Battalion was ordered
to take over this commitment and so the Bahrain Detachment was formed. It
consisted of No.1 and 3 Companies and part of HQ Company and Commanded by Major
Roy Dobson, it was 275 strong, including twenty three married families. In
June 1961 the Bahrain training became the real thing, when Iraq threatened to
invade Kuwait, the only troops available were the Detachment, 42 Commando
and a Squadron of Dragoon Guards, the troops moved to secure the Airfield with
the prospect of facing the entire Iraq Army. |

1979-1980 In
1965 Ian Smith the Prime Minister of Rhodesia declared UDI. The British Goverments
response was to impose sancactions. There followed a protracted civil war after
which in Jan. 1959 the white Goverment agreed to approve a new constitution. In
April of that year Bishop Abel Muzorewa became the first black Prime Mister. It
was agreed Robert Mugabe and Joshua Nkomo must be part of any future settlement. A
Monitoring force drawn from the 2nd. Bt. Commanded by Lt. Col. W.E. Rous, moved
to Rhodesia to try and convince the guerrillas to give up the fighting, come out
of the bush and take part in elections. This unique operation was a outstanding
success, Lt. Col. Rous. being awarded the OBE |
