EXERCISE ENDURING GUARDSMAN - NUMBER 7 COMPANY MARCH

FROM COLDSTREAM TO LONDON – JANUARY 2010

1.   To commemorate the 350th anniversary of General Monck’s monumental march from Coldstream to London in 1650, Number Seven Company Coldstream Guards will repeat the event in January 2010 setting off from Coldstream on 6th January and arriving at Tower Hill, London, on 30 January 2010, thus completing the march some 8 days quicker than their forebears.  The Regimental Lieutenant Colonel will be in Coldstream to see the Company off.

2.    Number 7 Company will depart from Woolwich am 5 January 2010 and travel to Berwick upon Tweed where they will spend the night in The Barracks.  At 0700 on 6th January they will move by coach to Coldstream and at 0900 they will set off from Henderson Park led by the Old Coldstreamers Corps of Drums who will fall out at the England/Scotland border.   A map of the route taken by General Monck is attached with the route to be taken by Number 7 Company shown in red ink.

3.    The aims of this exercise are fourfold:

a.             To commemorate the 350th anniversary of General Monck’s march to London by recreating it within modern parameters.

b.             To conduct an arduous long distance march within the UK using current military equipment.

c.             Conduct a high profile media and charity campaign to assist the Field Army and the First Battalion Coldstream Guards who will be deployed in Afghanistan.

d.                   Raise a minimum of £250,000 to be split equally between The Army

Benevolent Fund and The Coldstream Guards Charitable Funds.

4.   A number of media avenues have been investigated and it is hoped that the march will be covered by national and local newspapers and national and local TV stations.

5.   This exercise will without doubt attract many visitors, both military and civilian.  Invites will also be sent to various celebrities and sportspersons who may be well known for their involvement with charity or endurance disciplines to march with the company to both raise the profile of the event and help inspire the guardsmen.  OC 7 Company is happy for Association members to visit the Company’s camp sites between 1900 – 2100hrs and a copy of the overnight sites is attached.
